Closing the door

With the glass now in the windows and the putty drying, it is time to switch gears and start on getting the last major opening in the outside walls filled – the doors. Once the doors are on and closed, the interior space will be secure and it will be time to start making things pretty inside!

The outside doors have come from a local carpenter and are made of some wonderful hard woods. We have spent a number of days fitting and sanding the doors and are currently in the middle of varnishing them; they are really looking nice. Each door has its own character and the varnish we are putting on is pulling out the deep reds, browns, and yellows as well as the grains of the wood.

Sadly, this process is taking quite some time as it is still rainy season and each coat of varnish is taking a number of days to finish due to the humidity. When the sun comes out for an hour or two we rush to put the doors outside to speed up the drying process and then just as quickly rush to bring the doors back in when the weather clouds over and it looks like it is going to rain. Working during the rainy season certainly adds a variety of levels of difficulty to work such as painting!

However, looking forward the finished product will be worth it and we do have other things to work on as we are waiting for the doors to dry. But, soon the gaping holes in the wall we call doors will have a wonderful show piece to put in them, how wonderful and versatile wood is! I am always amazed at how God has made this material we so often take for granted.
